Zooey Deschanel's "New Girl" Makeup Tutorial

By Catherine Santino

Season 4 of “New Girl” recently premiered, and while I’m still binging on Season 3 on Netflix, I thought I would share my tutorial on the makeup that Zooey Deschanel often wears on the show. Her look varies at times, but I think I’ve found a way to recreate her go-to makeup pretty accurately, and with much more affordable products...

Zoey Deschanel

The main features of Zooey’s makeup that I regularly notice are: bronzy eyeshadow, full, fluttery lashes, defined eyes, rose blush on the apples of the cheeks, and coral/pink lips. All together it creates a simple, pretty makeup look that I think can be worn in any season and for various occasions.

For the eye makeup, I blended two shimmery shades from my Maybelline “The Nudes” eyeshadow palette. One is a darker bronze color, the other a lighter gold color. I took the darker color and blended it underneath the lower lash line a bit, just to open up and define the eyes. I also added a bit of gel liner, slightly winged at the outer corners. To fill out my lashes, I applied a few coats of Maybelline Colossal Volum’ Express mascara in Classic Black, then added one coat of Benefit's They're Real mascara to help lengthen them. You can also turn this into a smokey eye look by adding darker eyeshadows.

For the cheeks, I used Clinique’s Blushing Blush Powder in Sunset Glow and focused on the apples of my cheeks. I didn't do any contouring with bronzer for this look; Zooey usually has very porcelain-looking skin on the show with only a bit of subtle blush. However, if you want to warm this look up a bit, it's totally up to you!

Finally, for the lips, I applied a layer of Sonia Kashuk Lip Crayon in the shade Pinky Nude, and over that applied Clinique’s Long Lasting Lipstick in the shade Sugar Honey.

Overall, I’m really happy with how this look turned out. It’s easily recreated with inexpensive products, and is a perfect pretty-yet-subtle look for work or school. Hope you enjoy trying these makeup ideas on your own!

Beauty Tips: DIY Hair Mask Recipes

By Catherine Santino

When researching hair mask recipes, I came across so many different beauty tips for various hair types. You can find so many things in your kitchen that can benefit dry, greasy, or flat hair. But one ingredient I found to be common in all of them: egg. Using egg yolks in hair masks can be extremely beneficial for the health of your hair. It is rich in vitamins, and the protein it contains helps promote hair growth. By mixing it with other ingredients, you can alter it to your specific hair type. Let`s see how to revamp your hair with these easy and affordable beauty tips...

DIY Hair Mask Recipes for Dry, Greasy and Flat Hair

Hair mask for dry hair

Some tips:

-With all of these, remember to rinse with cool water, otherwise the egg will cook in your hair as you wash!
-Massage the masks into your hair and scalp, and then let it sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing.
-Using a shower cap can help soak in the nutrients of the ingredients.
-And remember, healthy hair starts from within.

For Dry Hair:

Egg Yolk & Olive Oil: The oil in this recipe helps to moisturize and strengthen dry, unmanageable hair. Mix together 1 egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of oil.

For Flat Hair:

Egg Yolk & Avocado: Avocado strengthens your hair from root to tip, giving it volume and shine. Mix together 1 egg yolk and 1⁄2 of a ripe avocado.

For Greasy Hair:

Egg Yolk & Honey: The healthy fats in olive oil and avocado may not be the best thing for hair that tends to be greasy. Honey is a great way to add shine to your hair without leaving any grease behind. Mix together 1 egg yolk and 2 tablespoons of honey.

I would recommend using a hair mask about once a month to really improve the quality of your hair. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little with ingredients. Play around with it and see what works best for you. Become your own beauty pro and share your favorite beauty tips with us!

Beauty Tips: How To Find Your Perfect Hair Color

By Catherine Santino

How To Find Your Best Hair Color

Choosing a hair color can be a daunting task. It’s a big decision, and it’s important to do your research and take your time. Below, you will find inspirational photos and tips to help you find  your perfect hair color!

Ombre

1) Find a stylist: it’s important to find a stylist that you trust and you’ve had a consultation with so that they know exactly what it is you want. Bring them photos and talk to them about what you’re going for. This way, you’ll feel much more comfortable with taking the plunge. To find out the top 10 fall/winter hairstyles, click here.

2) Consider your skin tone: depending on your skin tone, some colors may make you hairstyle look washed out or just be too harsh for you. Look up photos of celebrities or models with your skin tone and see what works for them. I’ve always been envious of people who can seem to pull off any hair color (Rachel McAdams and Emma Stone are ones that come to mind), but some of us just aren’t that lucky. Figure out what colors work for you and go from there.

3) Be practical: For a very brief time a few months ago, I was channeling my inner Demi Lovato and decided to dye sections of my hair purple. However, at the time I was also in the process of applying for jobs. I realized that it just didn’t make sense for the kinds of jobs I was searching for, and I would have a much better chance of getting hired if I stuck to more natural colors. This isn’t to say that you can’t dye your hair crazy colors; just make sure it makes sense for the kind of lifestyle you have or want.

4) Try Ombre: If you want to change your hair color but aren’t ready to make a full commitment, try an ombre hairstyle. If you want to go lighter, try just lightening the ends so your hair has a dark to light gradient. It’s a less intense way to try out a new color without committing to it 100%.

5) You can always change it: If your new hair color isn’t exactly what you pictured, don’t panic. You can always change it back or have it altered.

These are my beauty tips for finding your best hair color. Don’t be afraid to make drastic changes to your hair- it can be a fun way to experiment and try something new. Just make sure to do your research, get a good stylist, and take your time with it.

Simple Makeup Ideas to Try for Holiday Parties

By Katya Bychkova

Party-Ready Makeup Ideas

With so many parties coming up in November and December, it is important to keep in mind a couple of makeup looks that you could create in just a couple of minutes without purchasing any extra makeup products. In this inspirational post I propose you two holiday looks that you can try while getting ready for the family gathering and a party with friends. Here are my ideas for different holiday makeup looks...

Me

Look #1: Good Girl

Most fall and winter holidays are family-oriented. It means that you need to know how to create a beautiful but not too provocative makeup look which make your mom happy but still highlight your best features. Personally, I’ve noticed that my family members make me the biggest amount of compliments when I am using the shades of pink in my makeup. I bet you will receive many positive comments too if you try this easy makeup a la naturelle.

Step #1: Preparation

First and the most important step while creating a makeup that you will be wearing during the day is a primer. Thanks to this miracle product, your liquid foundation stays longer and your skin tone looks smoother. For me, the best primer is Luminous Foundation Primer by Sephora Collection because it contains light reflecting pigments that makes your skin glow.

Step #2: Foundation and Concealer

The next step is to correct your under eye shadows with the concealer. I prefer L’Oreal’s Instant Age Rewind in Light Pale for its incredible applicator that evenly distributes the product on your skin. Usually I apply concealer and do not blend it until my liquid foundation is on; in that way, the under eye area absorbs more product. I like to use L’Oreal Magic Nude Liquid Powder because it has a very pleasant consistency that doesn’t clog pores. This, for me, the best drugstore foundation reminds me Armani Maestro Foundation (which is spectacular!), but it is three times less expensive than Armani’s product.

Step #3: Eyes

My favorite trick for the natural makeup look is to use luminizer under the eyebrows so the eyes look bigger and brighter. In my opinion, the best product for the natural look is MicroSmooth Baked Luminizer by Sephora Collection in #01-Stardust. It has a very neutral glowing pigment that looks great on most skin shades. After the luminizer is applied, take a small amount of Maybelline Color Tattoo in Leather Cuir eyeshadows on your finger and apply it on your eyelid. Then, take a soft eye pencil and line your eyes; make sure that the line you are creating is very narrow -- there is no need for a dramatic eyeliner during the day. Finally, take a little amount of a silver eyeshadow from Almay Intense i-Color Smoky-i Eyeshadow palette and apply it on the inner corners of your eyes. Then, use your favorite mascara to complete the eye makeup.

Step #4: Cheeks

Use the same illuminator that you applied under the eyebrows, MicroSmooth Baked Luminizer by Sephora Collection in #01-Stardust, to highlight the cheekbone area. Then, pick up Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine lipstick, apply in below the area where you applied an illuminator, and blend evenly.

Step #5: Lips

I love lipsticks that not only look and taste good, but also hydrate lips, and Rouge Volupté Shine by Yves Saint Laurent is one of these rare products. Skip lip pencil, and apply just the lipstick, so lip makeup looks even more natural.

Look #2: Scarlet Red

When it comes to going out, I always prefer those makeup looks that incorporate red lipstick. In my opinion, bright lipstick makes every girl look prettier and allows her to feel more confident. Thus, why not wear the red lipstick to the holiday party? Also, I think that red lipstick looks the best if combined with dark eyebrows and not very intense but colorful and perfect eye makeup. In this tutorial I propose to combine purple and green eyeshadows with scarlet red lipstick.

Step #1: Foundation and Concealer

For the evening makeup, I usually use two-in-one foundation such as Yves Saint Laurent Teint Majeur in #01 Ivory. This top rated liquid foundation is created for mature skin (read: the product contains a primer) and provides a medium coverage. Don’t forget to mask those under eye shadows with the Yves Saint Laurent Touché Éclat that you can put either on top or underneath the foundation.

Stunning Sasha Pivovarova

Step #2: Eyes

Use an eyebrow pencil or powder to emphasize your brows. Then, apply the lightest tone of the eyeshadows from NYC New York Color HD Trio Eye Shadow Palette in #789 West Vintage under the eyebrow and on the eyelid. Use the darker shade of green on the outer lower lash line. Use purple color on the outer lid and contour. Use Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eyeshadow in #15 Bella Purple for the lid. Finally, apply a couple of layers of your favorite mascara.

Step #3: Cheeks

Select a blush color that highlights your best facial features. Stick to pink shades if you have pale skin like me (I used Chanel Joues Contraste powder blush in #64 Pink Explosion) or shades of gold if you have a bronzed skin tone.

Step #4: Lips

As discussed, I recommend using red tones of the lipstick for your holiday look, and there is no better brand for that kind of products than Chanel. One of my favorite shades of Chanel lipstick is #104 Passion. If you would like to stick to more affordable option, try Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor (I like #645 Red Revival) which is a great inexpensive drugstore lipstick.

Step #5: Perfume and accessories

Finally, don’t forget to wear your favorite perfume and earrings. My favorite brand of perfume is J’Adore by Christian Dior that I’ve been wearing for years; it is a classic floral fragrance by Dior that I recommend to try. By the way, I’ve picked one great perfume trick from the book How to Look Expensive by Andrea Pomerantz Lustig. If you want to apply a proper amount of perfume, spray it on your hairbrush first and then brush your hair with it.

Winter Skincare Beauty Tips

By Catherine Santino

Now that it’s getting colder out, it’s time to change our skin care routine. Winter months means constantly looking for ways to keep your skin moisturized as the weather gets harsher. Contrary to what you might think, you don’t need to break the bank to maintain healthy, glowing skin this coming season. Here are my beauty tips...

How to Take Care of Your Skin in the Winter

Club Fashionista blogger Amra B.

1) Drink water:

This is the most important skincare and beauty tip. Water is crucial to your skin’s overall health and keeps it looking hydrated and fresh. It’s easy to forget to drink water when it starts getting colder, but make sure to always carry a water bottle with you and drink throughout the day.

2) Vitamin E Cream:

If you have extremely dry skin like me, vitamin E cream is a great way to keep your skin from getting dry in the winter. It’s inexpensive, easy to find, and is extremely rich and nourishing for your skin. It is a bit heavy, though, so I recommend using it as a night cream. If you have oily or combination skin, I would recommend using something lighter, or only using it once a week.

3) Vaseline:

Another inexpensive, easy find. Use Vaseline on your lips, hands, face, elbows, etc throughout the winter to keep your skin soft and smooth.

4) Lip Balm:

Make sure to always keep a lip balm to moisturize your lips with throughout the day; harsh wind and cold can really dry them out in the winter time. I would highly recommend any Burt’s Bees or EOS beuty lip products. I recently bought an EOS lip balm in Honeydew and it smells amazing!

5) BB Cream:

Try mixing a BB cream in with your foundation in the winter. It really helps keep your makeup looking fresher throughout the day and prevents your foundation from flaking, especially if you have dry skin. Throw it in your bag to touch-up and rehydrate during the day. You can buy BB cream at the drugstore, and almost every makeup beauty brand has one. Here is our DIY fall/winter makeup tutorial in 8 easy steps!

There you have it, my skincare beauty tips for this season. Taking care of your skin during the coldest months of the year is very important, and with these few tips you can make sure you stay hydrated and healthy all year long.

Top 10 Fall Hairstyles

By Catherine Santino

Now that we are (finally) transitioning into Fall, it’s time to change up hairstyles. Cooler months mean we don’t have to worry so much about taming frizz or keeping hair off our necks in the heat. It allows a whole lot more freedom and creativity, which is definitely something to take advantage of. Here are...

Top 10 Fall Hairstyles:

1) Angled Bob:

If you’re itching to change up your hair but not ready to go for something super dramatic, this is a great style to choose. It adds something different and interesting, and frames the face really nicely.

2) Center parts:

I am seeing more and more center parts lately, and think they can be really flattering. It’s also a quick and easy way to switch up your hair if you’re getting bored with it.

3) Braids:

Braids are a great way to add something different to any hairstyle. Try French braiding pieces of hair into a ponytail or bun, and leave a few wisps out for a messier look. Braids are also a perfect solution for those days when you don’t have time to wash your hair!

4) Loose Curls:

This is one of my favorite looks. To get the perfect soft-looking curls, curl sections of your hair with a 1 ½ inch curling iron, then gently brush the curls out while they’re still hot. Then using your fingers, comb a holding mousse through your hair to ensure that it lasts all day.

Glamorous curls

5) Ponytails:

Another quick and easy solution to second-day hair. Tie your hair back in a ponytail mid-height, teasing it a bit first to give it some volume.

6) Grown-out Bob:

I’m seeing this more and more on celebrities and runways, and most of the time paired with a center part. It’s perfect for messy waves, too!

7) Bangs:

Bangs are making a strong comeback as of late. It can be a risky move, but if you take the time to find a stylist who you trust and are feeling bold, go for it. It’s a perfect look for fall and a fun way to change up your look.

Bangs look great when paired up with dramatic hair color

8) Messy Top Knot:

Yet another solution to second-day hair, this is a perfect style to pair with a chunky sweater, leggings, and boots for a comfy fall day.

9) The Wet Look:

If you’re feeling a bit bold, try out this high-fashion look that I’ve been seeing more and more of.

10) Beanies:

Practical and stylish, beanies are great for the cold weather and come in a ton of cute colors and styles. And of course, perfect for an unwashed hair day. Are we seeing a theme here?

Here’s to the new season and new, fresh hairstyles! Enjoy the frizz-free weather and the pumpkin spice lattes.
