Style Chat With Fashion Designer Dee Dee Sparrow

By Lara Medić

In English, Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian

Dee Dee Sparrow - she is like a songbird, cheerful, always surrounded by leaping scissors, materials, and needles. Her creations are airy, pleasant, wearable...she follows only one motto -make clothes for a person, not a doll!

Dee Dee Sparrow with her design

CF : Who actually is Dee Dee Sparrow? How did you choose that name?

DeeDee has always been my nickname, and my actual last name in English means Sparrow so that was all the more reason to choose exactly my designer name. Moreover, the thought of this cute little bird hopping that represents freedom and nature seemed fitting.

CF: When and how did did you fall in love with designing?

Even as a little girl, I made dresses for dolls, I was constantly redesigning and chopping...

CF: What was your first collection like? Compare your first collection with the latest?

My first collection was made from anything I could find in my house. I was 18, and the first show was held at the Holiday Inn in Sarajevo, organized by ABC models. I had a dozen designs, and I have to admit that they were all bought by a boutique in Brcko, Bosnia. In comparison with my latest collection, done on March of this year, I can say that the last designs (sewn all on my own) were more complicated patterns and difficult materials to work with. The last collection was more serious, which is a normal since I myself am ten years older now.

CF: Why is it a good choice to be a fashion designer? Can you make a living on that in Bosnia?

It's a good choice because it's always a channel where you can creatively express yourself and blow off steam, negative energy. Also, you do not have to look for where to buy clothes, what you need and what you want to have, but just create it yourself. I always have gifts for wonderful people. I do not think you can make a living form being a fashion designer in Bosnia but it's definitely a good source of extra income because there are still people who like to have something that is tailor made personally for them.

CF: What are your favorite materials to work with?

I like to work with all natural materials, of course, it depend on the season and my mood.

CF: What inspires you?

Everything can inspire me. Both beautiful and the not so beautiful. Inspiration is all around us, but definitely what inspires me the most is nature, especially the Adriatic sea.

CF: Do you have your own fashion motto?

Dress for the body you have, not the body you want.

CF: Who are your most frequent customers?

Mostly girls, young women, who prefer to wear comfortable clothes, to have a piece that is multifunctional, unusual and unique.

CF: Who would you like to dress?

I would like to dress Miroslava Duma.

CF: Who do you think are the best-dressed men and women in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the world?

There are a lot of girls, who have a sense of fashion and are not public figures, so in Bosnia I would not single out anyone. Women in Bosnia have a sense for beauty and design, and devote a lot of attention to detail, which is certainly commendable. Men's fashion does not match the women's passion and sense for fashion in Bosnia. I like how the women were in the photographs of the world famous photographer Murad Osmanna.

CF: How would you describe the fashion scene in Bosnia in comparison with other countries? What would you like change?

Our fashion scene is trying to be in line with the rest of the world but there is still room for improvement. I believe that our department stores and other fashion stores and boutiques, which now offer more, are very successful. The major issue is financing the first fashion collections of young designers. The lack of financial support for young talent has made Bosnia lag behind in comparison with other cosmopolitan cities in the West.

CF: What is your attitude about the prevailing trends?

Trendy is what makes you feel good, and should not be followed blindly. Everything that is trendy often does not fit all ages and people of certain occupations. It is just as not all colors suit people of all ages and body types.

CF: Do you have any role models in the fashion world?

I see my style as resembling some other noteworthy designers, but I believe there is no need for role models. We are all creators of something that is our own that should remain consistent.

CF: Based on what criteria do you decide what models will walk your runway?

I like girls who are charismatic and smile a lot. If during the casting I see your enthusiasm, I know you will do the same when wearing my dress.

CF: What are your plans for the future? What else can we expect from you? When is your next fashion show?

My next show you can expect at the Fall Fashion Week in Sarajevo. Our online shop will remain in operation while I will promptly notify when other venues to buy my line become available.

CF: And finally, to all the readers sonyindonesia, what would you like to say?

Everything you do should be a product of you and your feelings. Remember that the most expensive dress, bag and shoes cannot disguise an ugly character and a frowning face. For that reason smile and take care of your inner core!

Runway

In Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian

Kako ste izabrali to ime?

I lijepe a i one manje lijepe stvari. Insipracija je svuda oko nas, ali definitivno najviše priroda i more.

CF: Imate li svoj modni moto?

Dress for the body you have, not the body you want.

CF: Kako biste opisali modnu scenu u BiH u usporedbi s drugim državama?

CF: Imate li uzora u modnom svijetu?

DeeDee bags!

Zato- osmijeh :)

New York Fashion Week in Review

By Fatima N.

New York Fashion Week in Review:

Hot Designers & Top 7 Fashion Trends For Spring 2020

Another fashion week has come and gone (as fast as Anna Wintour was answering 73 questions in the span of 6 minutes!). From those in the tents to those following the action at home, it’s been a busy, frantic week. Well, it is January in the fashion calendar.

And there’s so much to talk about! Below, I will give you the scoop on the top 7 latest fashion trends for Spring 2020 and some young and talented designers you may want to keep an eye on...

New York Fashion Week Street Style

The Opening Ceremony:

What I saw in some shows was unconventionality, not just in the clothes, but in the way they were presented. Opening Ceremony had a play starring Elle Fanning instead of the usual runway presentation. Rebecca Minkoff and Nanette Lepore both had unconventional finales. Guests at Rebecca Minkoff’s show were asked to don a pair of 3-D glasses to see the final five looks, and the models at Nanette Lepore ended the show in a conga line!

New York Fashion Week: Young Talent

Many new designers have graced the runway, but these two stood out to me the most. These two brands intrigued me; the story behind them and their respective designers kept me eagerly waiting. They didn’t disappoint...

1. Amir Taghi:

Amir Taghi is a Houston based designer who has interned at Oscar de la Renta. This fashion week was his New York debut. That may sound typical, but what sets him apart is his age. Taghi is only 18 years old. He designed his first collection while he was a freshman. Talk about extremely talented. His collection was mainly cream and pastels and inspired by Bianca Jagger. I was really drawn to the lavender pieces.

2. Kempner

Kemper, the brand, is inspired by and named after a woman who was both Yves Saint Laurent’s muse and “the only chic woman in America” (according to Diana Vreeland, former editor of Vogue). This woman is Nan Kempner, a socialite from the 1950s. The label was developed by her two grandchildren, Meggie and Chris Kempner. The collection was inspired by “tensions, shiny vs. matte, classic vs. edgy”. The ensembles that walked down the runway were effortlessly chic and minimalist.

Top 7 Fashion Trends for Spring 2020:

Oh and of course, the trends!

1. Pastels. Backing off from neon and loud colors, pastels dominated the runways. Subtlety, basics and elegance is back. I am definitely gravitating toward the lavender.

2. PatternsIt being for spring, there were florals, and lots of white. Stripes made many an appearance as well. What was different was how the designers manipulated the florals and stripes.

3. Off the shoulder. Sleek and beautiful off the shoulder tops and dresses have made a comeback.

4. Gingham stylesaw a lot of gingham, for example at Oscar de la Renta and Diane von Furstenburg.

5. Sporty. Sneakers and pool sandals continued to dominate. Designers paired the sporty sandals and shoes to dress down the other pieces.

6. Embroidery. Hand crafted embroidery added a special effect to many fashion pieces.  Bejeweled embellishments and sequins made the garments sparkle on the runway.

7. Androgyny. Feminine pieces meet masculine cuts. Oversized masculine-like tops took over the runways with toned down colors. They were carefully balanced with tighter bottoms.

To wrap it up, here are some of my favorites. I can’t wait to recreate these looks come spring.

Cleopatra's Beauty Secrets We Never Knew

By Catherine Santino

Ancient Beauty Secrets: Cleopatra

Cleopatra is known throughout history as being an incredibly beautiful and charming woman. She often used these attributes in manipulating the people around her and getting her way from men. So, what are these ancient beauty secrets? How can we achieve Cleopatra’s flawless beauty today?

When it comes down to it, Cleopatra’s beauty regimen revolved mostly around completely organic, natural products such as:

Apple Cider Vinegar-

This can be very beneficial in keeping the skin clear, preventing age spots, and warding off bacteria and skin infections. It may be a little harsh on the skin however, so it is best to dilute the vinegar before washing with it. Scarlett Johansson also swears by this!

Sea Salt-

Sea salt is perfect to exfoliate with, and something Cleopatra used to keep her skin smooth and flawless. Since it may be a little impractical to use actual sea salt like Cleopatra, a great alternative is Dead Sea Salt Scrub with Coconut Oil, which you can get in most drugstores for about $15.

Rosewater-

this essential oil was often used by Cleopatra to keep her smelling fresh and clean. Simply a few drops is a lighter alternative than most perfumes (and much cheaper, too!)

Natural nail polish-

Cleopatra used Henna to add an all natural pigment to her nails. Since this may be a little hard to come by for everyday use, there are tons of other all natural nail polish options. I would highly recommend Piggy Paint; it’s non-toxic, odorless, and eco-friendly, and is available in a variety of amazing shades!

Henna tattoos

Honey-

Honey is very soothing and nourishing to the skin. It is full of vitamins and minerals and can act as an incredibly hydrating face mask. Try mixing a teaspoon of honey, ¼ of an avocado, and a teaspoon of coconut oil and let it sit on your face for about 15 minutes.

The key to Cleopatra’s beauty routine is the use of natural ingredients. If we let the vitamins and minerals that exist naturally around us work their magic, we can see some amazing results. Try incorporating a few more natural products into your daily routine, or even create your own face masks or body scrubs using the contents of your fridge! Although ancient times are long in the past, getting back to beauty basics is a lesson we can learn over and over.

Top 5 Energy Boosting Foods

By Sarah Baker

Ever feel sluggish and tired and just assume you didn’t get enough sleep? OR feel slow and unproductive around lunch time? It may be more than just lack of sleep. It may be the foods that you are eating. There are foods that both make you tired and give you energy. It’s possible that you just aren’t eating enough of the food that gives you energy and too much of the foods that takes it away.

Foods that you should make sure you are getting plenty of in your diet are those that consist of protein, complex carbohydrates, high fiber, high carbs, magnesium, dopamine, norepinephrine, B-12, and water. I will be discussing a list of foods you should incorporate into your daily diet to help raise your energy levels, and a list of foods you should avoid that slow down your productivity.

Top 5 Foods That Help Raise Your Energy

1. Protein and complex carbohydrates- if you are feeling tired, grab a snack of whole grain crackers with low fat cheese or a peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread.

2. High fiber and high carbs- I know carbs are a no-no on most diets, but it might be a lack of carbs causing you to lack energy. Carbs raise serotonin levels and absorb more slowly, keeping your blood sugar and energy levels stable. Fiber helps to keep your energy steady throughout the day. A great energy breakfast is whole wheat toast or a high fiber cereal. Also, try swapping out some brown rice instead of white. Beans, whole fruits, and vegetables are good sources of fiber to help sustain your energy.

3. Protein and Magnesium- These are able to turn convert your sugars in to energy. Low magnesium can also drain your energy. Foods high in magnesium include whole grains, bran cereals, and some fish.

4. Dopamine, norepinephrine, ad B-12- Tyrosine found in lean meats can help to boost the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine that help you to feel more alert and focused. Lean meats also have B-12 that can help to ease insomnia. Some lean meats that not only have these in it but are also rich in protein are lean pork, lean beef, lean turkey, and skinless chicken.

Healthy snacks & salads

5. Hydration- water may not be a food, but it definitely aids in energy. Making sure that you are staying hydrated can help you to avoid getting tired. Even mild dehydration can slow metabolism and steal your energy. Drink plenty of water or get it from fresh fruits and vegetables such as apple wedges and celery. Oatmeal and pasta are also good sources because they soak up water during cooking.

Hydrating and fresh snacks for you and your guests

Now about those foods we should avoid...

1. Microwave meals- these are full of salt and chemicals that just suck up your energy. Avoiding these will help your energy levels rise, especially if you are relying on them on a daily basis.

2. Turkey- I know I said that turkey can help with energy, but that is lean turkey and not a lot of it. Turkey is full of tryptophan that relaxes your body, which is why after eating a Thanksgiving turkey, that most people feel the need for a nap.

3. High sugar candy- We all get a craving for sweets every now and then, some more than others, but this is definitely something that we should avoid. High sugar candy causes your blood sugar to raise and then crash very quickly, leaving us drained of energy.

4. Fried Foods- Besides that fact that these just aren’t that great for you anyway, you should avoid them because if takes more energy to break down fatty foods, thus stealing it from us and making us lethargic.

5. Red meat- Again, because of health reasons, this should typically be avoided of consumed rarely, but it’s also an energy thief. Red meat takes a long time to digest, therefore using a lot of energy that we can’t use ourselves.

6. Breads- Another if gives us energy but also takes it away. In this instance, whole wheat carbs are good but that white, starchy, fatty carbs are not. They cause of blood sugar to rise and then quickly crash making us extremely tired. Muffins, donuts, pastries, etc. should be avoided or consumed on occasion.

7. Alcohol- A glass of red wine is supposed to be good for the heart, but alcohol in general isn’t good for your sleep habits. Drinking alcohol slows down your central nervous system and if you drink it too close to bed time, it can cause insomnia. Just remember if you partake, to drink smaller amounts and make sure that it’s a good time before your hit the sack to avoid being up all night.

Essentially, if it is going to cause your blood sugar to spike and then crash quickly, then you should probably eat it sparingly. I’m not saying that you can’t have these things, (who doesn’t like a glass of wine with dinner or an occasional pastry), you just have to make sure that you are eating more foods that give you energy than you are those who steal it to balance it all out. If you have been feeling lethargic lately and have been consuming a lot of the foods that steal you energy and less of those that give it to you, you might want to change your diet a bit.

Healthy & delicious dark chocholate snacks

Substitute a few of the foods that take energy with some of those that supply it and see how you feel. It may completely change your day. Productivity here we come!

10 Traits of Successful People

By Elma B.

Recently, I attended a speech by a sort of a Internet legend James Altucher, and was inspired to write the 10 traits of successful people. In fact, I asked him what he saw throughout the years were traits of successful people possessed, and he answered the following...

Before I continue, let me clarify that in this article I will define success as influence or affluence. I acknowledge that there are many shapes and forms of successes, and that you can be successful without being influential or having a high net-worth. With that said, this post focuses on the former two.

Me
After much digging, I listened to speeches by some of my favorites like Anthony Robbins, Richard St. John on TED and spoke with James Altucher, I came-up with a sound list of the 10 traits of successful people. The list is a combination of the knowledge I acquired and my own thoughts, which both helped me form my final conclusions. This is something that has been of interest to me for quite some time, so I am excited to share it with you! Without further ado, here are the...

10 Traits of Successful People:

1. Spirituality. Whether you are religious or not is irrelevant. Satisfying your spiritual craving could include something like group meditation or simply sitting quietly in a room alone and letting your mind rest from your oft chaotic inner banter.

2. Healthy Diet. Being overweight makes you more lethargic, whether in thinking or moving about. A healthy diet is not only apparent on the outside but causes your level of daily energy to spike. Amongst a myriad of its benefits, a healthy diet nurtures your skin, hair and keeps your body weight optimal. Your health is directly influenced by your diet. Every bite counts!

3. Exercise. I have noticed a spike in my energy since I have started to exercise daily. I feel better and love that I can see muscle definition on my body. I wrote a post about my body image struggles and how hard I work in the gym everyday. So, in case you may think that I wake-up looking like I do, I don't...it is a lot of determination, consistency and hard work.

4. Passion. Whatever you decide to do with your life, make sure it entails passion. Passion will carry you throughout the day and throughout your life. It will make it that much easier to give your 110% instead of anything less. The reason we (my sister and I) have persisted with Club Fashionista is because we are truly passionate about blogging, including in the realms of tech, fashion, fitness, travel, etc.

5. Persistency. I cannot say enough about persistency...many of us encounter what we perceive as daily defeats, i.e., when expectation does not match reality. However, what we often fail to realize is that no one is spared from daily defeats. Now, what distinguishes the successful people from others is being able to mold yourself to life's challenges and pick another road to get to your final destination.

6. Focus. Do not spread yourself too thin. Focus on the area where you shine. Where is your added value? For instance, if you are clumsy with people and an introvert, do not focus on sales. Instead, pick a field where you shine. We all have our qualities and weaknesses, think how to optimize your time and be effective at what you do.

7. Work ethic. Put in your hours, again wisely, at whatever task you have set to accomplish. Work early hours, sometimes 5:30am if an early bird, or very late hours if a night owl. Whatever your schedule, make sure to spend your time effectively in setting out your goals, whether it is achieving those little milestones or finishing the overall race.

8. Creative. Creativity is almost everything. Realize that there are no golden rules; in fact the best rule to abide by is that there are no rules. Be creative to solving your daily problems. I really liked James Altucher's suggestion of writing down 10 ideas per day to work your idea muscle so that you are never out of creative solutions when problems come knocking on your door.

9. Improve. Be willing to constantly learn and adjust. Remember being flexible is amazing because life is all about learning. When you stop learning, you stop living. Whenever you run into a set back, learn from it, and adjust. Nothing is written in stone.

10. Giving. As the cliche goes, and Anthony Robbins often says: "The secret to life is giving." It is really true that benevolence works wonders for us; the internal satisfaction we achieve is enormous. Just the other day, I stopped to take a few photos of a large family visiting New York City. I really took my time to capture the moment on camera, take several shots and from several angles. At the end, everyone walked away happy; the family was thankful, and I was happy to have been able to help.

There you have it, the 10 traits of successful people. I want to hear from you, what does success mean to you? Are there any other traits you would suggest I add to my list? Leave me a comment below, I love hearing from you!

(p.s. For the fashionistas, my outfit dissected: dress and hat from Zara; bag by Chanel; shoes by Yves Saint Laurent; eyeshadow by Makeup Forever, and lip stainer by Sephora).

Complete Tips on How to Look Sexy with Halter Top Dresses

Nothing is as attractive an outfit as halter top dresses. The proper styling guide will offer you a glance you never even imagined.

I think, i used to be fifteen after I saw Marilyn Monroe's much-publicized poster in that white wavering outfit, with a dark lip color that she boasted of. If you are any near recalling what image of her i am talking concerning, it would not take you long to understand that it absolutely was a halter top dress that she was donning. No wonder, sexiness had to ooze out from each little bit of her. When she walked, the planet watched. She stopped, and eyes popped out in awe. simply a look of her curves were enough for you to rejoice in. is not it wonderful how superbly halter top dresses cling to the rightest places of the body, and enhance your curves like none other? Personally, I subscribe to sporting long halter top dresses as a cocktail dress for a celebration, for there are solely some dresses during this world that flaunt your curves while not flaunting your flab.

If your chronicles anywhere resemble mine, I have something to share with you today. In my view, one of the many ways to dress up ideally is to don a short black halter top dress, wear boots with no less than 5-inch heels, apply some suave make-up, and leave hair disheveled. If that doesn't make heads turn, I know not what does. Following are some bites from my fashion seasoning. Some mesmerism that these kinds of dresses give me. Some ideas on embodying the feeling of a bride. Some ways to embellish femininity.

How to Wear Halter Top Dresses

You know, there's one good thing about these type of dresses, when it comes to women's clothing - you need not really care about your body type. The halter that goes beyond your neck, and ties up, beautifully elongates your torso, and gives you a slimmer feel. Your curves are enhanced, and your elegance is gussied up. There's only one thing, I think, you should mull over, that those towards to plumper side, when picking up a halter top dress, should go for one with thicker straps. On the other hand, those extremely slim must pick up a dress with smaller straps, for they can easily get away with it.

Another thing, that I think is important while wearing halter top dresses is to never show your bra straps. It becomes extremely ugly for anyone to see a woman clad in a beautiful halter top gown, with everything just puh-fekt, but those bra straps crying out loud for attention. You wouldn't want to make a mockery of yourself for picking up the wrong lingerie, would you? So, you could go for strapless padded bras, or the ones with halter straps, in order to suffice for the perfect bra selection for your halter top dress.

A halter dress is ravishingly revealing towards the top. So, it's always a wise decision to not show-off your bottom (unless and until you are too slim). Your top will already garner much attention - all you can do is, wear a good pair of shoes with it, preferably, heels, in order to budge the attention. Along with it, a beautiful glossy clutch, that goes in contrast with the color of your halter top dress, will steal words of admiration from people's mouths.

There's something about halter top wedding dresses that a bride could settle upon. A long white princess dress, curls wanting to fall on the face every now and then, high heels elongating the torso, that veil, not taking away the details of the dress, and that bunch of white orchids in the bride's hands as she walks the aisle. Do you even know how lucky your man is going to feel on the big day, when he sees you walking towards him? Just make sure, you don't accentuate your dress with unnecessary accessories. A diamond bracelet, or a li'l bit of pearl jewelry. You're sorted, trust me on that.

Out of the many hairstyles while you don a halter top cocktail dress, there's one that, I feel, is the best - a French bun. However, that'll look good on your only when you wear a long halter top dress. Leave your hair loose or open, in case you're wearing a short halter dress. Wear big belts to add beauty to your waist line, in case the dress is kissing every inch of your body.
